Payne’s Prairie Field Trip

Citrus County Audubon Society has scheduled a birding field trip at Payne’s Prairie for Monday, February 11, 2013. The public is welcome to attend. Preregistration is not necessary and participants with all levels of birding skills are welcome.

It begins at 8:30 am, will involve some easy walking, and will last about 3-4 hours.

Paynes Prairie is 22,000 acres of wilderness. It became Florida’s first state preserve in 1971 and is now designated as a National Natural Landmark. It is a fascinating place to see birds and other wild animals such as alligators, wild horses, and buffalo.

Some of the unusual birds we hope to see include: Whooping Crane, Wilson's Snipe, Vesper Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Hooded Merganser, American Bittern, Bonaparte's Gull, Chipping Sparrow and White-crowned Sparrow.
